University women’s Association, Pune - 1949
270 E,Gokhale Nagar,
Pune 411053
University Women's Association Pune was established in 1949 by a
group of enthusiastic graduate women firstly as "The Women Graduates
Union" Later this small beginning metamorphosed into the University
Women's Association of Pune with affiliations to both IFUWA and IFUW.
The aim of the founders like Ms Shantabai Bhandarkar, Ms Sane, Ms
Khan and others was to contribute to society in the social and
educational field. This aim was further strengthened and the talents
and expertise of members were utilized to empower and educate the
less privileged women in the community.
The first major achievement of ours has been the Working Women's
Hostel, built bearing in mind the need of working women finding safe
and secure accommodation away from home. It was established in
1979.Today, the building stands as a monument, reminding the new
members of the commitment, strength and motivation of the members of
yester years.
As the organization grew it became more responsive to the needs of
society. So was born the Model Montessori Marathi medium School,
started in 1981, for children of lower income groups.
Sucharita was started specifically to encourage and motivate girls
from the economically weaker sections of society. The focus of this
activity has been preventing dropouts in schools. We conduct
coaching classes for girls studying in 8th 9th and 10th STDs. The
knowledge imparted here does not limit to academics as the girls are
exposed to health issues, self-defense etc through workshops and
talks.
In the year 1996 we ventured into a new field-A Handicapped Center
for young adult Spastics .It was started as Music quest Centre for
the Handicapped and later changed to the present name Himmat .It is
a pre vocational centre that trains in paper-shredding, tie and dye,
block printing and embroidery. The centre gives a small stipend to
the trainees to motivate and build their self-confidence. We have
regular Yoga and Physiotherapy sessions. The trainees come to the
centre by bus, donated by Fleet guard.
This activity needs financial support as it mainly sustaining
through donations and sponsors.
Chhand Rang is an extension of the Sucharita activity. Here young
girls and married women from low-income groups are taught sewing,
embroidery, knitting and ceramic work, to enable them to generate
additional income.
The Research and Development cell is a recent addition to our
activities. This Cell extends opportunity for Interdisciplinary
research to the members desirous to undertake research work in any
discipline, like environmental sciences, natural and social
sciences, Social Work and Education. Members who are experienced
researchers offer consultancy to individuals and organizations.
Regular workshops and Seminars are conducted for representatives of
different NGOs.
Scholarships are given to needy and deserving girl students to
pursue their studies after 10th and 12th stds, towards vocational
training and to Post graduate scholars from all disciplines.
We conduct various programmes for updating the knowledge of members.
These programmes are sometimes open to public for publicity and
membership development.
We publish a News Letter "Progress Eves", with which we interact
with our members.
